Perhaps this title is in fact a little misleading. Food can’t really cause acne as it’s often a hormonal issue or something you’re born with, but there are some foods that can trigger the symptoms of acne. If you’re having a dry spell where acne seems not to be affecting you, some foods can cut that short and make your skin oily once again. These are the foods to avoid not only when your skin is going through a blemish-free period, but generally, if you know you suffer from the condition.
Here are the nine most problematic foods for those who suffer with acne and oily skin – avoid them as best you can!
Spicy foods and takeout
Foods that contain lots of spice and chili are one of the biggest causes of acne breakouts. Numerous studies have shown that those who suffer from acne see a significant increase in the acne symptoms that affect them whenever they consume spicy food. Scientists to this day are still confused about what exactly causes the breakouts, but it’s a possibility that the sweating that some people experience when eating spicy foods contributes to the clogging of the pores.
Spicy food is also often unhealthy, suggesting that the high levels of fat in take-out food and fast food could possibly be the reason why there is such a strong correlation between spicy foods and acne breakouts.
